Xbox 360 DVD Drive Malfunction
Hitachi-LG DVD drive (ROM 0059DJ) in a v1 Xenon Xbox 360 console. Drive refuses to stay closed, even ejecting after the system is powered off. System suffered from an E74 error when it was given me. The system’s previous owner dropped the console out of frustration (hard enough to crack the case), so I suspect this has something to do with it. I was able to fix the E74 error with a heatgun, but I can’t figure out what to do about the DVD drive. UPDATE: For anyone interested, fixed it by fully disassembling the drive, removing the tray and spinning the gears a bit, then ensuring that the tray was fully closed and the manual eject lever was fully returned to the most forward position. I believe the manual eject was the only real issue. When manual ejecting, you’re pushing in a white plastic lever. This lever lowers the motor platform that the disc sits on and then pushes the tray out. Pushing the tray back in on my own (or powering the drive and using the eject feature) wasn’t enough to get the lever back to it’s fully-forward position, and therefore wasn’t enough to make the platform to raise back to full height. As a result, the disc was not being grabbed between the platform and the magnet and even spun at all, causing the system to simply eject the disc. So, if you’re getting this problem, try just pushing the motor platform/carriage/whatever all the way upward and making sure that lever is where it’s supposed to be. Of course, after all this work and then flashing the …
i have the same prob but mine wont open but it keeps saying its opening, this is a bullshit problem
What’s all this about flashing drives? How did you fix the problem?
thanks, your updated description just helped me fix the same problem on my original xbox
hey buddie i believe the problem is something to do with your drive belt. the squeek is it somehow rubbing on itself. not entirely sure how to fix it but from knowing the problem u may be able to look over it.
Thats funny cuz I have the halo xbox and I got a broken xbox and now I have disc drive problems too. lol
when it says opening hit the top of your xbox usually upon doing that the xbox will open if that doesnt work maybe its a internal error and taking it about and looking at it may help
lube dat bitch up!!!!!
the silver part of the tray might be hitting something when it closes check that
you might need move the drive a little forward
the formware has been corrupt replace the firmware its all messed up
putting in a whole new drive from another xbox would get u banned right?
@smeagolonfire no,if you flashed it properly it won’t or can buy the same brand drive and swap the main board on the drive wihtt he new one
ahh k thanks, cuz im working on a freind’s xbox that has this same problem and i had thought about just switching it with the one from my old 360
youre kinda like rewriting the programming instructions for the drive or something like that
maybe the track/gears are off and the xbox thinks that the drive is not closed all the way. that could have been caused by dropping it.
what is ur gt
because i need help with taking off the magnet off the Hitachi-LG DVD drive
Peel off the label on the top of the drive. There will be a plastic disc covering the magnet. Heat the disc with a hair drier, then use a knife to pry it out. Lift the magnet straight up.
i have the same problem some one droped mine and it will not keep the cd shut it will not spin
the laser will not light up i need help too
the only thing i found up is that you will need to replace it with another of the same type of counsle or try using another worm moter
(its the spirell lookong thing inside if u dont want to buy another one)
if you place your finger on the optical head when the disc bay closes, what will happen? If the light tries to shine and the disc (if there was one there) spins for a split second, that would mean that the head is not coming up enough to meet the cd. That should mean that there is either a spring or a motor problem located under the optical head…I would think. I’m having a very similiar problem with a DVD burner. I’ll let you know what I find.
just buy a new dvd drive m8 and swap the firmware bord frm the old 1 to the new 1 make shure its the same drive as the old 1 aka samsung hatachi ben-q r watever and that shud fix it however if the firmware bordi broken you will need your new drive flashed this can b a pain if you dont no how to do this i wud get pro to do this
@DWells55 Do you have any idea where I can get one of those plastic pieces attached to the magnet? What happened was I didn’t have the tool to remove the piece, so I tried to remove it by hand and, it kinda broke lol, pretty stupid thing to do I know lol. The drive works fine, but I’m just kinda worried that sooner or later it may cause some damage to either a disk or the drive itself.
@xXxLAMBOFGOD12xXx Your best bet would be to check out the xbox-scene forums and go to their B/S/T (buy/sell/trade) section and put in a want to buy request for one. I’m sure there will be someone who has one.
@DWells55 Thanks for the response =)
Remove the front cover of the xoox. Open the disk tray. Take a couple of pincers and remove the rubber band. Then i washed it with some alcohol and dried it. I put the rubber band back with the pincers. First around the small wheel, then the big wheel. Put the front back on and the problem should be gone for a couple of weeks. Then you have to do it again.

its the small rubber band that opens the tray. Its dusty and is slipping on the wheel (weird squiky noize you hear). Remove front cover, open tray, take couple of pincers and remove the rubber band. some light is handy. Wash rubber band with alchol or something like it. Let dry. Put rubber band back with pincers. First on small wheel, than on big wheel. Now the problem is gone for a couple of weeks.
