Xbox 360 DVD Drive Noise – Hitachi vs BenQ compared
Let’s face it, the Xbox 360 DVD drive is way too loud to enjoy – shocking news for me when I got mine, featuring the Hitachi drive. I heard many rumours about the “much quieter” BenQ drive, so a couple of days after receiving my first one, I ordered another Xbox 360, which had the BenQ drive installed. Here’s a test of both brand new consoles side-by-side – judge for yourself. I believe the Hitachi drive vibrates more, causing some extra noise in the Xbox chassis; the BenQ drive runs smoother, not causing the chassis to vibrate and create extra noise – but really only by a fraction. Both are UK Elite models, bought in March 2008, tested with PGR3. Enjoy!

How To Fix the Xbox 360 Unplayable Disc Problem
Fixing the “Unplayable Disc” problem for the Xbox 360 Hitachi Disc Drive: 1.) Disassemble your 360 and strip it down to the inner machina. 2.) Unplug the two cords from the back of the disc drive. 3.) Remove the disc drive and use a knife to take off the circular piece on the top of the drive. 4.) Remove the magnet that is placed underneath the circular piece. 5.)Unscrew the top and bottom casings of the disc drive. 6.) Use a lubricant such as WD-40 to lubricate the spindle of the motor on the bottom part of the disc drive. 7.) Super-Glue the washer of the disc drive into place. 8.) Re-plug your disc drive back into your console. 9.) Eject the disc tray. 10.) Place a game disc into the disc tray. 11.) Place the top magnet over the center of your disc. 12.) Close the disc tray. 13.) Make sure the laser reads up and down the entire disc. 14.) Get back to playing your games without the “Unplayable Disc” error. -Tweed

Xbox 360 DVD Drive Malfunction
Hitachi-LG DVD drive (ROM 0059DJ) in a v1 Xenon Xbox 360 console. Drive refuses to stay closed, even ejecting after the system is powered off. System suffered from an E74 error when it was given me. The system’s previous owner dropped the console out of frustration (hard enough to crack the case), so I suspect this has something to do with it. I was able to fix the E74 error with a heatgun, but I can’t figure out what to do about the DVD drive. UPDATE: For anyone interested, fixed it by fully disassembling the drive, removing the tray and spinning the gears a bit, then ensuring that the tray was fully closed and the manual eject lever was fully returned to the most forward position. I believe the manual eject was the only real issue. When manual ejecting, you’re pushing in a white plastic lever. This lever lowers the motor platform that the disc sits on and then pushes the tray out. Pushing the tray back in on my own (or powering the drive and using the eject feature) wasn’t enough to get the lever back to it’s fully-forward position, and therefore wasn’t enough to make the platform to raise back to full height. As a result, the disc was not being grabbed between the platform and the magnet and even spun at all, causing the system to simply eject the disc. So, if you’re getting this problem, try just pushing the motor platform/carriage/whatever all the way upward and making sure that lever is where it’s supposed to be. Of course, after all this work and then flashing the …

xbox 360 hitachi dvd drive bumping after spindle clean
Updated, READ!!! Unmodded 360 from 2005 with Hitachi GDR-3120L 47DJ that worked great, then suddenly 100% “unreadable disc.” I did end up repairing it, and it’s worked great since June 2008. Here’s my history. I think it’s a decent order to follow if you can’t get a warranty or professional repair. But especially now that you can transfer DLC, I would just mail it to MS rather than cracking the case and doing all the tedious tuning. Try canned air – attempt to clean the laser lens. Disassemble 360 and clean laser w/ alcohol. Check if spindle magnet has come loose and is stuck to the top (common problem), and if laser lights up. If your discs aren’t spinning (can’t hear them): Run DVD w/o cover, see if discs turn, try a “push start”. Mine didn’t. Spindle moves easily after I cleaned and relubed motor/spindle follwing these BAD instructions: youtube.com Those instructions are missing a critical step. Mark the 3 screws with a sharpie and note how many turns to tight before you dissasemble the spindle. They control the hight and tilt of the disc relative to the laser. If you end up not knowing the right height (like me), mark the screws anyway, then try different adjustments. Full tight is safe, but probably won’t work. Too loose will make the disc rub – don’t use your favorite game. Start with CDs – those are easier to read. I ended up around 1 turn loose from full tight on the two screws that have springs. Also, test with CDs first – those are easier to read first. Another …
